Gender discrimination for pension annuities and motor insurance premiums

Millions of men approaching retirement could be left thousands of pounds worse off if a European court rules on 1 March that insurance companies can no longer use gender to calculate annuity rates and insurance premiums.

Young women drivers will also be hit hard if “gender discrimination” is ruled illegal. An Association of British Insurers research paper claims some under-25s may face motor insurance increases of between 50% and 60% almost overnight – which could translate into an extra £500-£1,000 a year.

Motorists turn to more fuel efficient cars as car insurance costs rise

Motorists are being hard hit with rises in car insurance and petrol and many are thinking of choosing a more fuel efficient car when they next buy one.

According to research carried out by moneysupermarket.com, almost 50 per cent of those questioned believe that they will purchase a more fuel efficient model next time as they try to save money on motoring costs. Around 10 per cent said the price of car insurance will have a direct bearing on which model they buy and some people said that they will be using public transport instead as driving has become too expensive.

Pete Harrison, car insurance expert at moneysupermarket.com commented: “With prices on the up it is more important than ever drivers ensure they are shopping around for the best deals on insurance, those who do will reap rewards and make their hard earned cash go further.”

Individual Health Insurance Reform Intense Debate

When House Republicans voted Friday to block funding for health care reform implementation (see below), it was with the knowledge that most Americans disapprove of the tactic. A new CBS News poll shows 55 percent of Americans disapprove of the defunding effort while just 35 percent support it. The poll also shows, however, that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) continues to be unpopular overall. Just 21 percent think the law will make the health care system better while 23 percent believe it will make things worse. Perhaps most interesting of all is that 44 percent are unsure of what the law does, and they don’t know enough to say what the impact will be. T

FOS clarifies marine insurance issues

The Financial Ombudsman Services (FOS) has issued a technical note covering some of the issues that arise in relation to complaints involving marine insurance policies.

The Service says it deals with around 100 complaints involving small craft each year and that in most cases the insurer has refused (or restricted) a claim on the basis that:

The vessel was not seaworthy; the consumer had not taken reasonable care to avoid loss or damage; non-disclosure; the claim was fraudulent; the security requirements in the policy were not complied with.

The Ombudsman’s approach in considering each of the above categories is now available on the FOS website
